Hermes Translator FAQ
Answers to common questions about setup, privacy, offline translation, peer-to-peer conversations, and supported platforms.
Getting started
What is Hermes Translator?
Hermes Translator is a real-time voice translation app for private conversations. Speak in your language, translate on device, and play the translated result aloud for another person.
Do I need an account?
No. Hermes is designed to work without user accounts or sign-in.
Which devices are supported?
Hermes is available for iPhone on iOS 18 or later. Android support is in development and currently experimental.
Offline & privacy
Does Hermes work without internet?
Yes, core translation can work offline after the required language support is downloaded to the device. You may need internet the first time a language is installed or updated.
Are conversations sent to Hermes servers?
No. Hermes is built around on-device speech recognition, on-device translation, local text-to-speech, and direct device-to-device communication for peer conversations.
Is conversation history stored?
Conversation history, when enabled, is stored locally on your device. You can review or manage saved conversations from the app.
Languages
What languages are available?
Available languages depend on the translation and speech capabilities installed on your device. iPhone support is powered by Apple’s on-device language technologies.
Why is a language unavailable or locked?
Some languages may require device support, a local download, or Hermes Plus depending on the app version and feature rollout.
Can both people use different languages?
Yes. Choose your language and the other person’s language. In peer-to-peer mode, Hermes shares language preferences when devices connect.
Peer conversations
How do two devices connect?
Open Nearby or Peer Conversation, choose your language, and let Hermes discover nearby devices. You can also join using a QR link when available.
Does peer-to-peer require Wi‑Fi?
Devices use local wireless technologies such as Bluetooth and Wi‑Fi. They should be near each other with Bluetooth and local network permissions enabled.
Can iPhone and Android connect to each other?
Not yet. Android support is experimental, and cross-platform peer-to-peer transport compatibility is planned for a future release.
Troubleshooting
Why is speech recognition not starting?
Check microphone and speech recognition permissions in iOS Settings, make sure another app is not using the microphone, and try restarting Hermes.
Why is translation slow or unavailable?
Confirm the language is supported on your device and download any required language packs while connected to the internet.
Where can I get more help?
